A VS Code extension for GitHub teams

Talk about the code where the code is.

RepoChat gives every GitHub repository its own chat room inside VS Code. There are no invites to send: if you can push to the repo, you're in.

Free for public repos, and for two people on a private one.

Built for the conversation around a pull request

General chat apps don't know what a file, a line or a PR is. RepoChat does, because it lives in the editor.

Access follows GitHub

Sign in with GitHub and the room is there. Remove someone from the repo and they lose the chat too.

Send a selection

Select code, right-click, send. Your teammate clicks the snippet and lands on the same lines in their editor.

Pull requests as cards

Share a PR and it shows its live status. One click opens it on GitHub, another checks the branch out.

Files and screenshots

Paste a screenshot or drop a file into the panel. Images preview inline.

Never miss a reply

A chime, a popup and an unread count when a message arrives while you're heads-down in a file.

Seen, edited, deleted

Read receipts show who has caught up. Fix a typo or remove a message after sending.

Up and running in a minute

  1. Install the extension

Search for RepoChat in the VS Code Extensions view, or use the button on this page.

  2. Open your repo

Any clone of a GitHub repository works. Click the RepoChat icon and sign in with GitHub.

  3. Tell a teammate

When they install it and open the same repo, you're in the same room. Nothing to configure.

Free to start, priced per seat when the team grows

Upgrade from inside the extension. One person pays for the repo or the organisation, and everyone else just joins.

Questions

Who can join a repo's chat?

Anyone with push access to the repository on GitHub. Read-only access to a public repo isn't enough. Access is re-checked with GitHub at least once an hour.

What does RepoChat store?

The messages, files and code snippets you choose to share, so teammates can read them later. It does not read or upload the rest of your repository. The privacy page has the full list.

Why does it ask for the GitHub repo permission?

GitHub needs that permission to answer "can this person push to this private repo?". Your GitHub token is used for that check and for loading pull requests, and is not stored on our server.

What if someone posts something they shouldn't?

Anyone can report a message, and the repo's admins can delete any message in their chat. We review reports and can suspend accounts that break the content rules.

What counts as a seat?

Anyone who has connected to the chat in the last 30 days. Someone who leaves the team stops using a seat after that.

What happens if I downgrade?

Nothing is deleted. History older than 30 days is hidden and comes back if you upgrade again.

Your repo already has a team. Give it a room.
